Comparative – Android or iOS: which phone to choose

Here is our comparison of the best smartphones of the moment. You just have to choose the one that best suits you!

The best smartphones: TOP 3

It should still be specified ? Smartphone has undoubtedly become the highest-tech product that is used the most on a daily basis. And with an average lifespan of 20 months and an average selling price of around 420 euros in France, this is a significant investment.

It is therefore important to choose the one that best suits your needs throughout this period. And contrary to what one might fear, choosing the best smartphone is not necessarily about buying the most expensive on the market. It all depends on your criteria.

To guide you as best as possible, we test over a hundred smartphones a year. Below is a comparison of the best smartphones on the market, whether you are a fan of Android or Apple. The whole is obviously classified by price, because the best telephone is above all that which corresponds to your budget.

And because it’s not just the new one in life you can also read our selection of the best reconditioned iPhone and reconditioned Samsung smartphones.

The most premium smartphones

You are looking for the best phone of the moment, the one that will meet all your needs ? The one with the best components ? A powerful processor, a quality camera and a battery that will never let you down ? Below, you will find terminals that do not compromise, with unsurprising prices up to their ambitions …

The iPhone 13 Pro Max is a digest of the best in Apple. It is the most stuffed smartphone of technologies offered by the apple on its 2021 range. If it uses the same design as last year, it is gaining a little in thickness to accommodate a battery of greater capacity.

First major change: it finally adopts a 120 Hz slab ! Apple finally gets on the page with high refresh rates and this fluidity brings a real plus in the comfort of use. While the gain in power compared to last year is correct, there is much more interest in improving autonomy. Between the battery of greater capacity and the rate of adaptive refreshment, one reaches without problems the two days on a charge. It is by far the best iPhone ever designed on this point.

Last major development: the photo module which is now much more gifted in macro mode. The telephoto lens gains power to reach the 3x, a point always practical for capturing images from afar without sacrificing quality. The photosites of the sensors are also larger, which translates into an even better rendering in low light. For video lovers, kinematic fashion brings interesting creation possibilities, even if it is not a daily revolution.

The iPhone 13 Pro Max is therefore unsurprisingly the best iPhone of the moment, but also one of the most impressive smartphones on the market in general.

If you find it a little too large, don’t hesitate to refer to the classic iPhone 13 Pro, it takes all the forces in a slightly more compact package. You will find all the details in our iPhone 13 Pro test.

With the Pixel 6 Pro, Google is backing up on the high-end sector, with a particularly daring look and a photo module that occupies the entire width of the screen. In addition to being pretty, the result offers excellent ergonomics, even if you will handle the phone with both hands.

On the display side, there is a very good quality OLED 6.7 inch slab. Colors and brightness are in keeping and you are entitled to the adaptive 120 Hz.

But it was above all the Tensor processor, which was expected at the turn. If the latter ensures perfect fluidity to the system, it turns out to be a little less powerful than the Snapdragon 888, especially for the game. However, the chip is doing well on the specialized calculations related to the photo.

Not surprisingly, the three sensors coupled with the magic of Google algorithms produce an exceptional result in the photo. It’s simple, the Pixel 6 Pro excels in all situations. Finally, its autonomy is solid since you last almost two days on a charge.

With this Pixel 6 Pro, Google operates a real upmarket, all at an ultra aggressive rate. A real show of force as we would like to see more often.

For our detailed impressions, direction our Google Pixel 6 Pro test.

If there was not much doubt that the last Galaxy S version would be a good phone, one wondered how much it would make a difference. First observation, Samsung managed to give a little freshness to its design, with a very pleasant black to the eye and an imposing photo module which no longer seeks to hide and adopts an aluminum covering.

As always, Samsung sets new image quality milestones, with an OLED 120 Hz slab that breaks image brightness records and offers high quality colors. We hold the standard meter for the year. The S21 Ultra now also supports styles, but unlike the Note, it is not delivered with the telephone and there is obviously no space to store it.

The on-board Exynos takes the lead in the Android performance ranking, at least until the arrival of Snapdragon 888. But beyond its good performances, the telephone surprises by its very solid autonomy. Do not plan to load it as soon as the box opens, however, since Samsung follows Apple and no longer delivers a charger … It supports the fast load 25 W .

In view of its size, the photo module had an interest in ensuring and it must be admitted that Samsung did not disappoint. The 108 megapixel main sensor produces very good quality shots in all circumstances. But it is especially the zoom 10x which seduces, with simply impeccable results. The 100x zoom is still present and improved, but it remains fairly gadget.

More iterative than revolutionary, the S21 Ultra imposes itself without too much worry like the new reference Android smartphone. There are some flaws, but you really have to look for them. If you have a fairly solid wallet, you can’t do better. We obviously recommend that you read our full test for details.

With his Find X2 Pro, Oppo had managed to pose as Samsung’s most credible rival in the very high-end Android last year. And with the Find X3 Pro, Chinese seems to be on the right track to renew performance.

Original from a design point of view, the device has an impeccable finish. Nothing to complain about on the very good OLED screen either. It offers a high brightness and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. On the processor side, we find a Snapdragon 888 and therefore some of the highest performance on the market. The autonomy reaches two days, but it is above all the fast charge that impresses: we go from 5 to 95% of battery in 30 min !

The camera is quality and versatile, but it is above all its surprising microscope function that brings it out of the lot.

Oppo therefore offers an exceptional smartphone here, the few faults of which are frankly minor. You will find more details about it in our full test.

The best (a little) cheaper high-end smartphones

The following products are a little cheaper than the ultra premium devices just mentioned. Either because they came out a few months before, or because they are slightly less well equipped than a flagship model launched at the same time. This often loses things like sealing or charge by induction. Whatever the reason, this is where we will find the “flagship killers” who have everything (or almost) of a big one.

OnePlus confirms its daytime will in the (very) big courtyard with a resolutely ambitious OnePlus 9 Pro. An approach that is found both in terms of very careful design and technique.

The screen is significantly improved, with in particular better controlled curved edges and an adaptive refreshment of 1 to 120 Hz. For the rest, we find the Snapdragon 888 which makes the telephone one of the most powerful on the market. On the autonomy side, OnePlus chose to favor the fast load. The phone only lasts a day and a half, but can be fully charged in less than 30 min !

The photo module designed in partnership with Hasselblad does a very good job, but it is not yet quite at the level of the best. OnePlus delivers a very good smartphone to us here, sold a little cheaper than the others .

You will find all the details in our OnePlus 9 Pro test. If your budget is more limited, his little brother, OnePlus 9, is a good alternative. He made some compromises on the screen and the photo part while maintaining the excellent performances of Snapdragon 888.

The little brother of the Pixel 6 Pro arrives with the same ambition as his big brother to impose himself as a reference of his price category. We therefore find a gigantic photo module which spans the entire width of the telephone without unbalancing it. Quite rare at this price level, the telephone is certified IP68.

The OLED screen is good and offers a refreshment of 90 Hz. The latter is not adaptive, which impacts autonomy. We also find the home processor, the Tensor. The latter is not quite up to the best Snapdragon chips in terms of raw power, but is doing well on consumption and photo functions.

The Pixel 6 thus ensures two days of use. An excellent score slightly tarnished by the load not so fast (2 hours for a full tank). The icing on the cake is of course the photo. The three sensors coupled to Google’s supernatural algorithms do a great job both day and night. He is by far the best photophone in his category.

Very good in all areas, the Pixel 6 is a small bomb. It is essential without forcing as the best choice of the moment in this price range. We detail it in our Google Pixel 6 test.

The iPhone 13 mini continues on the path of last year’s model: all the qualities of the classic iPhone 13 in a more compact format. And if as for the rest of the range it has grown a little thick, it is for a good cause. The larger battery finally allows it to display correct autonomy. We thus gain almost 90 min compared to the iPhone 12 mini. Enough therefore to hold a full day without having to go through the load box.

If the screen gains a little in brightness and sees its notch become more compact, we are not entitled to the 120 Hz which remains the preserve of the line Pro. The A15 Bionic processor is still a performance model without exploding consumption.

But the last point on which the iPhone 13 mini progresses is on the side of the photo. He inherits from the photo sensor of the iPhone 12 Pro Max from last year and the change is obvious, especially in terms of light sensitivity. The result is a much more versatile telephone, especially under difficult conditions.

The iPhone 13 mini is a real success and especially one of the very rare high-end models that fit into a comfortable pocket ! Our test is still in progress, but in the meantime you can read our iPhone 13 test with which it shares its characteristics.

The best smartphones for value for money

If the very high end always makes you dream, you can’t always put more than 1000 euros in a phone. And this is where the category of best quality / price relationships comes into play, with absolutely wild competition. You are looking for the right plan of a lifetime ? The best balance between acceptable performance and not too high a price ? Here is our selection of the best value for money reports in the mid-range segment.

After a Northern OnePlus which had brilliantly marked the entry of OnePlus on the mid-range, the brand returns with a smoothly evolving North 2. It is therefore always structured around a 6.43 inch OLED screen with a refresh rate of 90 Hz. The slab is good, although it is no longer as impressive as last year, with an increasing number of competitors passing 120 Hz.

The performances are solid, the MediaTek processor provides good general fluidity and has enough punch to play Fortnite at 45 FPS. And if autonomy is struggling to exceed the day and a half, OnePlus put the small dishes in the big ones for the fast recharge: we are entitled to the same Warp Charge 65 W as on the high end, with a full tank which is therefore done in just 30 minutes !

Only the photo is half-dyed, with pictures sometimes too saturated and compressed.

If it is less revolutionary than its predecessor, the North 2 shines by its balance and imposes itself as one of the best choices current in the mid-range. We explore it in detail in our OnePlus Nord 2 test.

The Google Pixel 4a is the last mid-range offered by the creator of Android. If he does not take on a gargantuan battery or 90 Hz screen, he stands out for his excellence in the photo part, ranking him top by hand best in his category despite his only 12.2 megapixel sensor. He sees in the middle of the night and even paints a picture for you, according to Omar.

Then, this 4a seduced by its format still as compact as its predecessor with its OLED screen not exceeding 5.8 inches. It’s a pleasure in hand. This small size obviously prevents it from offering an autonomy that will drag you to the end of the night with intensive use, but it will be enough to last the day. However, it is catching up with a good ramp-up compared to Pixel 3a thanks to the integration of its Snapdragon 730G. Little surprise, however: its replacement, the Pixel 5a will not be sold to us. The 4a therefore remains the option of choice for an affordable Pixel experiment.

Positioned just below the 300 euro mark, the Redmi Note 10 Pro is the year for the Chinese giant. It is pretty, but its large size may cause some problems in the small hands. Surprise on the screen side since Xiaomi has chosen an AMOLED slab of 120 Hz.

The Snapdragon 732G is correct, but poses concerns about overly greedy games, notably Fortnite. Autonomy is satisfactory, however, with almost two days of conventional use. The 33 W fast charger will need an hour to fill the 5020 mAh of the battery. As for the network, it will be necessary to be satisfied with the 4G, the 5G not being on the menu.

Regarding the photo, the main 108 Mpx sensor does good work day and night. The Redmi Note 10 Pro boxes clearly above its category and that’s good. It is a concernless issue as one of the best deals of 2021. Find all the details in our full Redmi Note 10 Pro test.

The best smartphones at first prize

Smartphones at low prices, there are a plethora, with qualities that are variable to say the least. This sometimes makes the choice all the more difficult since, unlike the high-end, some models are really to be avoided. This is why in this affordable selection we guarantee you products that will not disappoint you.

Xiaomi struck a blow with his Redmi Note 10 and this variant 10S comes to correct some absences of the basic model. Sold under the 200 euro mark, Note 10S offers an excellent OLED screen. He also swaps the original Snapdragon for a MediaTek Helio G95. The latter provides solid performance, but also adds support for the NFC, which is still practical.

The main photo sensor also increases to 64 Mpx. It is not a revolution, but we appreciate the gain in precision of the photos. Add to that good autonomy, efficient fast charging and a phone delivered with Android 11 and you have one of the best choices for small budgets. Find his full test here.
